Sobriety is not just about stopping the use of alcohol and/or drugs; it's about actually living and enjoying a better way of life. Here are a few ways you can do your part for a healthier life of sobriety.
Seven Ways to Take Care of Yourself, Now That You're Sober:
1. Eat healthy: Your body is your living transport that carries out your wishes, be good to it. Eating healthy has its rewards; it doesn't have to be a chore. Check out the 5-A Day the Color Way healthy eating, that's a fun way to keep track of what you put in your body.
2. Exercise: The benefits of exercise are great. Exercise helps build your self-esteem by providing you with a better self image. You'll have more energy and a more positive outlook on life; and it's a great way to release some of that stress before it builds up.
3. Meditate: If you don't have a meditation practice now, you may want to explore some meditation techniques, maybe even join a meditation group.
Meditation serves two purposes, to relax and to maintain conscious contact with your God or Higher Power.4. Stay active: Join a sober bowling league, attend sober parties, go golfing, get on a volunteer list, help out at the food shelf, offer people rides to their support group meetings, plan a group hike, join a reading group, or even a writer's group.
5. Learn something new: Set yourself a goal to learn something new, for example: a new language, a new game, play a music instrument, take a computer class, learn how to do landscaping, gardening, or pottery. Even learn survival tactics.
6. Borrow or buy that Book: Just about every one you talk to mentions a good book and makes recommendations, and it's true, there are some real good books out there to be read. If you can't afford to buy it yourself, ask a friend to loan it to you.
7. Get that subscription to that news or health magazine: Maybe even that Word Puzzle or Sudoku publication. Having your magazine come to your home will give you something to look forward to and will assist in keeping your mind active.
You may not be able to repair some damage done from drugging or drinking, but there's always room for improvement when it comes to sobriety. Plus, you can enjoy a healthier happier life by just doing your part in living sober.
